World Pizza Day is a new holiday. 2017 is shaping up to be a very special year for pizza. It was at this time that pizza was given the official title of World Heritage by the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Neapolitan art of “Pizzaiuolo”. The feast day is January 17, which is also the feast of Saint Anthony the Great (also known as Saint Anthony or Anthony the Abbot) in the Catholic and Orthodox churches. This Egyptian monk is considered the patron saint of pizzerias. Although many countries around the world celebrate International Pizza Day on March 9, in Italy it is celebrated annually on January 17. But, pizza is so good, we can all celebrate pizza day anytime.

The longest pizza in the world – of course – was made in Italy in 2015. It is 1600 meters long and weighs almost 5 tons! More than 300 people worked to make this amazing pizza, including members of Italy’s National Pizzioli team. However, the large pizza is fast disappearing in the United States, where about 350 slices of pizza are eaten per second.
