The 2022 event has been a huge success, attracting tens of thousands of people from across California to get a glimpse of UC Davis and the different departments it has to offer.

“The response to the 2022 event has been incredible,” Goodman said earlier. “People were excited to come back in person and participate.”

This event, which was celebrated on Saturday 101, is a source of pride for many in the university and in the community.

But it also has a history of loud and often dangerous behavior, prompting vigilant efforts by campus and city police to keep wayward picnickers out Saturday.

“(Picnic Day) has many faces,” UC Davis Police Department Chief Matt Carmichael said. “It feels like a downtown bar night, but it’s so much more than that.”

Several outside teams pitched in to deal with the crowd over the weekend, Carmichael said, including police from other UCLA schools and the Yola County Bomb Squad. This year, campus police created a new safety video and worked with student leaders to talk to Greek organizations about safe partying. In recent years, the Davis City Police Department has doubled fines for alcohol, noise, public urination and smoking in the downtown area that surrounds the campus.

Increased vigilance follows several incidents in recent years. In 2010, the city police arrested 33 people. More than 500 emergency calls were made – twice as many as a year ago. In 2011, a UC Davis student died at a post-picnic party. In 2014, the city reported 36 picnic arrests, compared to 42 the year before.

“On the day of the picnic, people will see a lot of families having fun, they’ll also see a lot of drunk kids,” says Jenny Haller, a 2011 UC Davis graduate who returns to the event every year. She relaxed with her friends at a bar on a Saturday and recalled milking a cow at a picnic her sophomore year. “Being on campus can be more fun than being downtown.

Student Council President Grace Scott said she believes alcohol-related incidents are becoming less common and that for most students the day is just a community celebration.

“For my friends, Picnic Day is a celebration of being a student and having the opportunity to be a part of something so amazing,” she said. “We couldn’t do this event if downtown Davis didn’t want us to do it. It’s really about supporting these businesses and students. It’s really a labor of love.”
