Uc Davis Picnic Day 2023 – UC Davis’ annual Picnic Day event is planned for April 15, 2023 with the newly announced slogan “Ignite Our Moment” to showcase and celebrate the passion of UC Davis students.
The theme was chosen by the picnic day’s 12 student council and was formally announced Wednesday at the campus reception.
Uc Davis Picnic Day 2023
“This year’s theme represents Davis and what we stand for,” Jesse Goodman, this year’s Picnic Day chairman, said in a press release. “Our theme honors the past, the hard times, but takes the opportunity to benefit from change in our university, our community and our country.” This theme is designed to bring us together and celebrate the unique feelings we have as UC Davis students.

Picnic Day is one of the nation’s largest student events, showcasing and celebrating campus life and the diverse achievements of UC Davis students, alumni, staff and faculty, offering a day of information, education and fun. The day’s activities include fun for the whole family with a children’s fair, music and dance performances, educational shows and sporting events, according to a press release.
The open house returned in person earlier this year after being held for most of 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 event has been a huge success, attracting tens of thousands of people from across California to get a glimpse of UC Davis and the different departments it has to offer.
“The response to the 2022 event has been incredible,” Goodman said earlier. “People were excited to come back in person and participate.”

According to Goodman, major shows and events slated to return in 2023 include the Doxie Derby, the chemistry department’s magic show and a laser maze. Other popular events leading up to the day of the picnic include a marching band battle, a children’s discovery show, a costume parade, a cricket run, a student fair organizer, fun stages and parades through downtown Davis.
The council prior to the day of the picnic is also scheduled to announce a parade meeting that incorporates the theme through his work and contributions to the Davis community later.
“Ignite Our Moment represents who we are as a community and the atmosphere on campus this year,” Goodman said. “The University of California, Davis has returned to the vibrant campus we know and love – with lifelong learning, pioneering research and exploration, and lasting memories and connections. CI Davis calls the annual Picnic Day open house. It drapes its wide green campus with ribbons and balloons, offers a buffet of food and drinks, and invites almost anyone to feel at home.
This event, which was celebrated on Saturday 101, is a source of pride for many in the university and in the community.
But it also has a history of loud and often dangerous behavior, prompting vigilant efforts by campus and city police to keep wayward picnickers out Saturday.

“(Picnic Day) has many faces,” UC Davis Police Department Chief Matt Carmichael said. “It feels like a downtown bar night, but it’s so much more than that.”
Several outside teams pitched in to deal with the crowd over the weekend, Carmichael said, including police from other UCLA schools and the Yola County Bomb Squad. This year, campus police created a new safety video and worked with student leaders to talk to Greek organizations about safe partying. In recent years, the Davis City Police Department has doubled fines for alcohol, noise, public urination and smoking in the downtown area that surrounds the campus.
Increased vigilance follows several incidents in recent years. In 2010, the city police arrested 33 people. More than 500 emergency calls were made – twice as many as a year ago. In 2011, a UC Davis student died at a post-picnic party. In 2014, the city reported 36 picnic arrests, compared to 42 the year before.
C Stem Day And Roboplay Competition Are Saturday
As of 5 p.m. Saturday, 22 citations have been issued on campus for drinking and no arrests have been made, Carmichael said. At 9:30 p.m., Davis Police Lt. Tom Waltz said some arrests had been made, but he could not provide an exact number.
About 75,000 attended Saturday’s all-day event, which a 65-member board began planning nearly a year in advance. On campus, highlights have included a German derby in the arena, a liquid nitrogen ice demonstration and, this year, a kayak race in one of the gym’s pools.
Outside the campus, local pubs were packed with visitors as early as 11am and drink specials continued throughout the night. Attendees who were able to play beer pong on the lawns of the fraternity houses. Others wandered the neighborhood or sought restorative sleep on a whim.
Organizers Announce Theme For Picnic Day 2023
“On the day of the picnic, people will see a lot of families having fun, they’ll also see a lot of drunk kids,” says Jenny Haller, a 2011 UC Davis graduate who returns to the event every year. She relaxed with her friends at a bar on a Saturday and recalled milking a cow at a picnic her sophomore year. “Being on campus can be more fun than being downtown.
Student Council President Grace Scott said she believes alcohol-related incidents are becoming less common and that for most students the day is just a community celebration.
“For my friends, Picnic Day is a celebration of being a student and having the opportunity to be a part of something so amazing,” she said. “We couldn’t do this event if downtown Davis didn’t want us to do it. It’s really about supporting these businesses and students. It’s really a labor of love.”
