In the next few years, Steamboat Resort Base will be virtually unknown to most tourists and seasoned locals alike. First of all, the resort decided to renovate some of its old base buildings and move some clerical offices off site. There will be more options for core activities, which include a new ice rink, communal gathering spaces, outdoor seating, fire pits, and easy access to Main Street. The decision to add a more streamlined entrance to the Gondola Square from the bus station was a wise one. Currently, there is no direct road from the street to the base. There will be a new escalator to take guests to the arena. This will eliminate the maze of winding stairs in the bus station and make the Gondola Square more of an open concept. They also plan to expand the ski area, move the existing gondola into an open cabin building, and build a brand new eight-person gondola all the way up to Sunshine Peak!
“The reimagined marketplace, along with exciting projects on the mountain, addresses the long-awaited needs of the Steamboat core area,” said Perelman. “We are delighted that our parent company, Alterra Mountain Co., recognizes the importance of investing in and reimagining the future of Steamboat Ski Resort and has been supporting this incredible investment for many years.”
As many of us have realized, the Steamboat Resort has outgrown the main floor space and the renovations will help increase traffic significantly. The project to relocate the existing gondola building and add a new eight-person gondola will increase off-base capacity from 6,000 people per hour to 10,000 people per hour, said Bob Keenan, chief planner for Steamboat, which oversees gondola traffic. hour! This new capacity will allow guests to be more comfortable and reduce pressure on the lift lines.

This new gondola will also provide access to the new ski school area in the existing Bashor Bowl. Steamboat Resort plans to add 650 acres of developed land to the Pioneer Ridge area. This will expand the trail map by 20% to a total of 3,620 acres – making Steamboat the second largest ski area in Colorado!
