It will replace the iconic red and blue streetcars that first rolled into Little Cottonwood Canyon in 1971. “After 50 years of good work, it’s finally time to become a literal snowbird for real streetcars and enjoy a well-deserved -must be retirement,” Snowbird announced today. It is estimated that the original cabins traveled 794,994 miles, which is the same as a trip to the moon and more than one and a half times.
Built by CWA in Switzerland, the new cabins will feature floor-to-ceiling windows and modern design. During the summer months, the tram will have three 3-by-3-foot glass floor panels and an outdoor rooftop balcony for up to 15 people. “The new tram cabins pay homage to the original red and blue trams, while featuring a fresh, sleek design with a few extra touches,” said Snowbird.
How To Be A Snowbird
The last day to ride the existing tram cabins is April 3. The new cabins have been completed and are currently being shipped to Utah. Come April, the cabins will be installed and inspected with the tram reopening scheduled for late June.
