Beginning in the 1820s, the Ironbound District (so named because of the railroad tracks) was known as the home of German and Irish immigrants. However, in the 1960s, a wave of Portuguese immigrants moved to the area, followed by Brazilian immigrants in the 80s. Newark’s Portugal Day Festival was founded in 1979 by the late community activist Bernadino Coutinho. Coutinho promoted Portuguese heritage through his organization, the Bernadino Coutinho Foundation, while helping new immigrants adjust to life in a new country.

The Luso-American National Festival in the United States continues today after being canceled for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Social activist Bernadino Coutinho (1937n – 2016) has organized Portugal Day celebrations in Newark for more than 30 years. Through his foundation, Coutinho helps to promote Portuguese culture and social integration. One of the most interesting things that still happens today is the big parade, with bands and traditional dances, organized by the community committee.
The event will be held on the Ironbound at the intersection of Niagara and Ferry. Open to the public, and operated by Sol Mar, it usually attracts thousands of visitors. The ceremony is read from a 24-feet hydraulic platform, where actors directly from Portugal will lead the party. The safety of visitors is also a priority, with support from the City of Newark and the Newark Police Department providing security.
The festival will present “Portuguese Cowboys”, Zay Amaro and his band for the opening concert; the trio Os Burium, which has played in many other countries with their styles ranging from pop to reggae; accordionist Filomena Raposo; and singers Licinio Ferraria and Alexis.
