Increased fan interest in the Padres, fueled by trade-deadline moves that included 23-year-old superstar Juan Soto, is expected to spark the franchise’s first-ever offseason.

General manager Eric Gruppner told the Union-Tribune that the club has already surpassed the record sales of 18,808 set in 2004 when Petco Park opened. The number of new ticket requests for the 2023 season brought the total number of ticket requests to more than 20,200 since the news of the Soto trade.

“The response from the fans has been phenomenal,” Gruppner said. “Now, people listen, I don’t want to look out.”

Gruppner said the reason for the restriction is threefold. Since not all fans can afford to buy the minimum bundle of 20 games, the team wants to keep enough seats for the sale of a game. Limited seasonal sales also maintain sufficient stock for larger groups.

Another factor is increased revenue, as the team’s payroll will exceed Major League Baseball’s luxury tax threshold for the second straight season. Single-game tickets are sold at full price, while season tickets are discounted.

Grupner said the plan is still being developed, so no exact maximum number has been set. Other details are also discussed, such as whether partial season tickets will be sold when the cap is reached.

In 54 home games this season, the Padres have allowed just under 2 million (1,989,766) and are tied for 5th in average (36,848), behind the Dodgers, Cardinals, Yankees and World Series winners . It’s behind the Braves.

Soto is the centerpiece of what many consider the greatest trade in baseball history. In his first game with the Padres, Wednesday’s crowd of 44,652 was the third-highest of the season despite being against a last-place team in the middle of the week (the sweater helped, too).

“Really, the ticket (area) left for the season ticket will be the highest level,” Gruppner said. “There is literally nothing in the field level, nothing in the roof level, nothing in the outer reserve.”
