Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet. It is the source of our life that supports the sustenance of humans and all other organisms on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people worldwide. Furthermore, the ocean is central to our economy, with an estimated 40 million people working in ocean-based industries by 2030.

With 90% of large fish stocks depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We must work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer eats the body, but instead restores its vitality and breathes new life into it.

“Resuscitation. collective action for the oceans” is the theme of World Oceans Day 2022, the year framed by the celebration of the Decade of Ocean Science and the Nations Oceans Conference, which was canceled two years later due to the epidemic.

The Sea Conference (July 27-July 1) has finally arrived after being canceled for 2 years due to the pandemic. The conference, hosted by the governments of Kenya and Portugal, will seek to advance much-needed innovative science-based solutions aimed at ushering in a new chapter in global ocean action.

Despite being among the most inaccessible environments on the planet, both contain tiny bits of plastic far removed from human activity. International days and weeks are opportunities to educate people about issues, mobilize political will and resources to address global issues, and celebrate and reinforce humanitarian achievements. The existence of international days predates the establishment of these countries, but they have been used as powerful propaganda tools. We also celebrate other holidays. The 2022-2023 World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Board is the largest group to date, with 26 members representing 20 countries.

Congratulations to these inspiring young leaders who represent different countries and backgrounds. Each will provide unique perspectives and ideas that will help World Oceans Day evolve in exciting ways.

They will work together to inform and motivate their communities and countries to take action through various projects and inspire young people and others around the world. By working with each other and others, the Council will make a real impact in June and throughout the year to protect and restore our blue planet.

The Ocean Project has coordinated World Oceans Day on 8 June for the past 17 years. It is an important environmental problem. We get both food and medicine from the deep blue, and it helps to maintain the climate. Oh, and there’s something about water being the “lungs of the earth.” it turns out that most of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean. We always feel that the waves give us breath. (Okay, once or twice it’s a lifesaver, but that doesn’t diminish the value of one of our most precious resources.) But if we don’t take steps to preserve it, we’ll lose more than a weekend spot.
