Dr. To celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., UAY and the Iowa City Public Library have partnered to bring weekly programs to middle and high schools throughout January. Events take place every Friday from 5.19.00 at the UAY Swaim Youth Center and include:
We will read, learn, and discuss Dr. King’s life and role in the civil rights movement. The first 30 people to attend the session will receive a free copy of the graphic novel March by American icon Congressman John Lewis, written by Lewis himself, as well as Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell.
Young people are invited to speak/sing/act/dance the truth that Dr. King instilled in them. Interested practitioners can register with ICPL by emailing [email protected].

Iowa City’s Day of Service begins with the Unity Rally and March at 9:45 a.m. (starts at UAY at Eastdale Plaza and goes to Mercer Park Gym). Following the Unity Rally and March, Mercer Park Gym will host a celebratory program featuring entertainment, a keynote speaker and a free lunch.
Starting from the year, several service-based activities for participants and several other activities for children and families will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can park on site. People of all ages are welcome to participate! Activities include:

Once again commemorating the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16, DJ Mookie, CJ Boyd, DJ Wesley Rae, Minister Jo and Cheron will pay tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a special program from 7:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The day will include music by black artists, music from the civil rights era, portions of historic King speeches and more.
