by Martin King Day 2023 – In January 2023, the city of Dallas will host the 41st annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The week-long programs highlight issues of equality, diversity and opportunity. The week includes a day of prayer, a work day, a wreath-laying ceremony, a job fair, an equity seminar, a youth conference and a scholarship and award ceremony. The week of celebration culminates with the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade.
The City of Dallas announces the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest. 2023! The competition awards eight scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 (each award) to high school seniors accepted to a postsecondary educational institution (two-year college, four-year university or trade school).

After King’s death, U.S. Representative John Conyers and U.S. Senator Edward Brock introduced a bill in Congress to make King’s birthday a national holiday. The bill was first voted on in the House of Representatives in 1979. However, they fell five votes short of the number needed for adoption. The two main arguments raised by opponents are that the paid holiday is too expensive for federal employees and that the holiday honoring private citizens runs counter to long-standing traditions because King has never held public office. At the time, there were only two public holidays in honor of George Washington and Christopher Columbus.
Soon after, King Central asked for support from the corporate community and the public. Musician Stevie Wonder released the single “Happy Birthday” to popularize the movement in 1980, and the success of this strategy was further strengthened when he held a peace rally in 1981. 60 million signatures were collected to demand that Congress pass the legislation. It is considered the largest appeal of support for an issue in American history.
President Reagan initially opposed the holiday, citing concerns about cost. But on November 2, 1983, Reagan signed legislation introduced by Representative Kathy Hall that established a federal holiday in King’s honor. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 78 to 22 and the House by a vote of 338 to 90. This holiday was celebrated for the first time on January 20, 1986. It’s not on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. . This is because it complies with the guidelines of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

The Selma March, also known as the “Montgomery March” from Selma, was a political march from Selma, Alabama, to the state capital, Montgomery, held from March 21 to March 25, 1965. The march, led by Martin Luther King Jr., was the culmination of several emotional weeks in which protesters attempted to march twice but were once violently stopped by local police. About 25,000 people participated in the 50,000-mile march. These events became a turning point in the American civil rights movement and led directly to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
