Labor Day 2023 Images – The latest summer flyer comes in the form of Labor Day. Yes, most of us take a day off, but this holiday brings different feelings. With summer still 21 days away on the calendar, it’s time to think about it. It feels like school has started and summer vacation is over. So what’s behind Labor Day and how did it get its place as a federal holiday?
Labor Day is always the first Monday in September, meaning anywhere from September 1st to September 7th. This year it is September 4 in the USA and Canada. However, this is not the case in many countries – most of them celebrate May 1st.

Don’t work on weekends? Lunch break? Paid vacation? An eight-hour day? Social security? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you can thank unions and the American labor movement for that. Years of hard work (and the laws that followed) have paid off the most in our work today. On the first Monday in September, we take a day off to celebrate Labor Day and reflect on the contributions American workers make to our country.

There are different opinions about how the holiday began. A version was presented in September 1882 to the Knights of Labor, one of the largest and largest American labor organizations at the time. The Knights of New York City held a public march of various unions on September 5th – with the help of the newly formed Central Labor Union (CLU) of New York. CLU secretary Matthew Maguire subsequently proposed a national Labor Day on the first Monday in September to mark this public outcry.
In another version, Labor Day was introduced in September by Peter J. McGuire, vice president of the American Federation of Labor. In the spring of 1882, McGuire proposed a “general party of the working class” for the CLU, beginning with street marches for organized labor and ending with local unions. McGuire suggested the first Monday in September as the best day for Labor Day because the weather is nicer and it’s between July 4 and Thanksgiving. Oregon was the first US state to make it an official holiday. In 1894, 29 more states joined when the federal government declared it a federal holiday.
On May 4, 1886—a time when most American workers worked 18- or 20-hour days—tens of thousands of workers demonstrated in cities across the United States to demand an eight-hour day. Chicago police attacked these peaceful protests, killing six people by beating random groups of labor organizers planning to meet two days later. When angry Chicagoans staged a peaceful protest in Haymarket Square the next evening, the police moved in again. The man, who has never been identified, detonated a bomb that killed a police officer, prompted police to open fire on protesters, and sparked violence that left a dozen workers and police dead.

Interestingly, Chicago was the site of the bloody Pullman Strike of 1894, which led to the establishment of the first Monday in September as an official labor holiday in the United States.
The strike took place in May at Pullman’s factory town in Chicago, a factory built by luxury train manufacturer Pullman Company. Differences between cities were more pronounced. The owner of the company, George Pullman, lived in one of the buildings, and most of the workers lived in camp-style dormitories. When the Great Depression hit the country in 1893, Pullman, like many executives of the time, decided to cut costs – cutting salaries by about 30% while maintaining wages. .
These conditions led the workers to go on strike on May 11, 1894. The walkout was supported nationwide by the Association of American Railroads (ARU), which announced that its members would no longer operate trains with Pullman cars at the ARU. This national strike ends in a railroad shutdown west of Chicago and causes 125,000 workers at 29 railroad companies to walk off the job rather than break the strike.

When railroad companies in Chicago hired strikers to replace them, the strikers took a variety of actions to stop the trains. The General Managers Association, which represents local railroad companies, was challenged by attorney general Richard Olney, a former railroad attorney, to lobby for intervention. A federal court in Indianapolis ordered Olney to stay out of the strike, allowing President Grover Cleveland to send in federal troops to break it up.
A few days later, Cleveland realized that he needed to act quickly to calm the increasingly volatile labor movement. But he does not want the May Day incident to create strong feelings among the workers. So Cleveland went back to the first holiday in September 1882 and signed into law that Labor Day in the United States would be celebrated on the first Monday in September.
Communist and socialist parties around the world chose May 1 as the day to commemorate the Haymarket affair. The 1904 conference called for unions to demonstrate on May Day – demanding a standard eight-hour day. They organized a movement for “world peace”. May 1 is a public holiday in many countries around the world known as “Labor Day”, “International Workers’ Day” or similar names, although some countries celebrate Labor Day on a different date that is important to them. , as does Canada, which, like the US, celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday in September.
