With the fall of the British Empire in the 1950s, Jamaica made several amendments to its constitution to allow for greater autonomy and a prime minister. In 1958, Jamaica became a founding member of the West Midlands Federation, a political union of Caribbean islands that were colonies of the United Kingdom. In September 1961, Jamaican dissatisfaction with federation and slow progress towards independence led to a referendum in Jamaica, in which 54% of voters wanted to leave. The Jamaica Labor Party won the 1962 election under the leadership of Alexander Bustamante.
On 19 July 1962 the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed the Jamaican Independence Act, granting Jamaica independence on 6 August 1962 when the first Jamaican flag was raised. Bustamante was the first Prime Minister of Jamaica and Jamaica joined the Commonwealth of Nations.

In the center of the flag is a golden cross with two black and green triangles. This particular design was selected in a national competition and given the nickname “La Cross”.
