The Jamaica Labor Party won the 1962 election under the leadership of Alexander Bustamante.
On 19 July 1962 the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed the Jamaican Independence Act, granting Jamaica independence on 6 August 1962 when the first Jamaican flag was raised. Bustamante was the first Prime Minister of Jamaica and Jamaica joined the Commonwealth of Nations.
