After landing the highest-rated recruit in program history, Iowa State basketball is quietly building its top 2023 rankings.

If you look at the current rankings of 2023 recruiting teams, you’ll quickly notice programs like Duke and Kentucky at the top of the list. However, one program to keep an eye on is Iowa State Basketball, with the Cyclones 2023 class not far behind the Blue Devils and Wildcats.

Currently the top 2023 class among Big 12 teams, Iowa State is quietly putting together one of the largest individual recruiting classes in program history. The big reason for this? Well, not only does the Cyclones’ 2023 class include the only five stars to ever commit to Iowa State, but another name that ranks among the top five highest-rated commitments in program history.

Looking at the Cyclones 2023 class, the star is Omaha Biliew, a five-star prospect out of Waukee Senior High. The No. 1 player in the state of Iowa, Biliew is the highest-rated player ever in the state of Iowa and will likely be the focal point of the Cyclones’ offense and defense in 2023-24.

Along with Biliew, the other big name in the Cyclones’ 2023 class is four-star Milan Momcilovic, a power forward who is also among Iowa State’s top five all-time players. Momcilovic, who will continue to play a key role for the Cyclones in 2023-24, combines with talented 6-foot-2 forward Biliew to form a frontcourt duo that will likely be among the best in the Big 12 next season.

As for the third current tackle in Iowa State Basketball’s 2023 class, four-star Jelani Hamilton has no shortage of talent at 6-foot. A four-star guard, Hamilton was the first member of the Cyclones’ 2023 class to commit to Iowa State and should make an impact as a freshman from day one.

While it remains to be seen whether Iowa State’s 2023 class will remain in the top five in the country, the Cyclones will likely be one of the top classes in the Big 12 regardless. Can I join this already talented group in the coming months? Never again this regular season will the Cyclones (15-5, 6-2 in the Big 12) face the kind of defensive pressure the Tigers, ranked No. 13 in the nation, faced.

Figuring out how to play against the pressure that has become Iowa State’s identity wasn’t that big of a deal, and that’s what happened Saturday.

Losing on the road against a team that is currently 16-6? I doubt that’s on the NCAA selection committee’s mind as much as Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger.

The 2022 Iowa State football season isn’t even characterized by disappointment. Matt Campbell et al. hoped to compete in the Big 12, but the Cyclones did their best, finishing 4-8 in conference play with just one win.

The void left by Brock Purdy at quarterback was definitely felt as the Cyclones returned to their pre-Campbell days with a 4-8 finish.

If Iowa State is going to return to the field and compete in 2023, it will need some players from the 2022 recruiting class to step up and become stars.

Jirehl Brock has been unlucky with injuries in his career, and if he returns and is healthy in 2023, he will likely be the starter. In 2022, he had 445 rushing yards and three touchdowns, 113 receiving yards and another score on 21 catches.

But Cartevious Norton could impact the game for Iowa State after a disappointing season in that regard.

Norton was second on the team in rushing in his first season at Ames, finishing with 312 yards and two touchdowns on 3.6 carries.
