British imperial rule in India began in 1757 when the British East India Company won the Battle of Plassey and took control of all of India. India’s freedom struggle began during World War I and was led by the famous leader Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi strongly advocated non-cooperation and non-violent methods of protest, which led to civil disobedience movements.
After a long and tireless struggle for freedom, India’s struggle has paid off. After two world wars, Britain was weakened and thinking about ending its rule in India. In 1947, the British government announced that it would transfer all power to India by June 1948, but conflict and violence between Muslims and Hindus led to an agreement to divide India into two independent countries. To solve this problem, the British government proposed that any constitution drafted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 3 June 1947 should not apply to some countries that refused to ratify it. On the same day, Lord Mountbatten, the Viceroy of India, implemented the partition plan. The Mountbatten Plan was accepted by Parliament and the Muslim League. Between 300,000 and 500,000 people died on both sides as new borders were drawn and the map of the world changed forever. At midnight on August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru’s “Confidence in Destiny” speech gave India independence.
British rule in India ended with the transfer of power to newly independent Pakistan and India. Lord Mountbatten became the first Governor-General of the new Indian Dominion, and Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India. Established in 1946, the Constituent Assembly became the Dominion Assembly of India.

These days, most Americans enjoy grilling out in their backyard, beach, or park. Some attend parades or processions and enjoy fireworks, often at dusk. Most of us have already learned this history lesson in school, but we didn’t really pay attention as the clock ticked towards recess or the end of the day. But we cannot fully appreciate our freedom unless we know how we got it and, more importantly, how close we came to losing it. The history of American independence is truly fascinating, with more historical twists and turns than we can cover here. But you can still start with the basics.
America was not really the country of the “United States of America” in the 1700s. Instead, there were 13 colonies, each with a different personality. From 1763 to 1773, King George III of Great Britain exerted pressure on the colonies, imposing harsh taxes and laws against them in the British Parliament. Exorbitant taxes on British luxuries such as tea and sugar were designed to benefit the British Crown despite the plight of the colonists. By 1764, the phrase “Taxation without representation is tyranny” had become a catchphrase throughout the colony.

The more the colonists rebelled, the more powerless King George became. Imagine that the enemy not only has the right to enter your home, but also to demand food and shelter from you. The Barracks Act of 1765 allowed the British Army to do so.
But the Stamp Act of 1765 proved to be the straw that broke the colonists’ back. A bill passed by Congress in March would have taxed all printed paper, including newspapers, legal documents and waybills. Colonial grievances grew, and in the fall of 1768 British ships arrived in Boston Harbor for a show of force. Remember that the Royal Navy dominated the world’s oceans because of the large presence of the British Empire.
On March 5, 1770, tensions erupted in Boston Harbor during a street fight between colonists and British soldiers. The soldiers opened fire and killed 47-year-old Crispus Attucks, the first black American to die along with three other colonists in the Boston Massacre.
