by Holocaust Remembrance Day 2023 Usa – Starting at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023, Doughty Street Chambers will host a hybrid (in-person and online) event to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day. We will remember the millions who died during the Nazi persecution of the Holocaust and the genocide that followed.
As part of this year’s Holocaust Remembrance Day theme, “Ordinary People,” we’re hearing from members of Doughty Street and their connections. John Gould Rubin, Christopher Salon K.C. son-in-law, will talk about what happened to his grandparents who lived in Vienna, and how this has been recognized by the Stones of Remembrance initiative; Patrick O’Connor Casey – ‘The German Eyewitness’; Ben Cooper CS will interview his mother, Lili Lom, about the life and persecution of her Jewish father in Nazi Germany. Although he was honored by Germany for his bravery as a doctor during World War I, he was banned from practicing his profession in the 1930s because he was Jewish. He founded the German Boy Scout movement after meeting Baden-Powell. However, the Nazi Party recruited members during Hitler’s youth. He was arrested by the Gestapo on charges of treason under the Nuremberg Laws in 1938, then convicted of continuing a proscribed organization to secretly collaborate with the Boy Scouts; and Marisa Cohen reads from The Diary of Anne Frank.

John Gold Rubin – In June 2022, John and his four sisters placed a “memorial stone” outside the apartment building in Vienna where their mother grew up, commemorating the murder of their parents by the Nazis in 1942. John will give the same speech as that day during the DSC Holocaust Remembrance Day event.
