It is celebrated on the last Monday in May; from 1868 to 1970, it was celebrated on May 30.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor and mourn those who fought and died while serving in the US military. Many volunteers placed American flags on the graves of military personnel in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial start of summer in the United States.
The holiday, known as Decoration Day, was proclaimed by Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War.

This national agreement was preceded by several local agreements between the Civil War and the Logan Proclamation. Many cities and people claimed to be the first to see it. But in 2022, the National Cemetery Administration, a division of the Department of Civil Affairs, thanked Mary Ann Williams “for the idea of sprinkling flowers on the graves of soldiers of the Civil War – Union and Confederate.”
By 1890, all states in the Union had adopted it. World Wars declared it a day of remembrance for all members of the US military who fought and died in service. In 1971, Congress designated the holiday as “Memorial Day” and changed its observance to the last Monday in May.
Two other days celebrate those who have served or have served in the US military: Veterans Day (formerly May), an unofficial US holiday honoring those currently serving in the military, and Veterans Day (November 11), which is celebrated by all those who have served in the United States armed forces.

In some such cases, the claims refer to documented events that may have occurred before or after the civil war. Some may have originated from the general tradition of decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers rather than the special ones that led to the proclamation of the nation.
And during the American Civil War. Some claims may be less respected, as some researchers seem to take credit without evidence, while dismissing evidence with better evidence or connections.
Of the written memorials that occurred after the Civil War and had the same purpose as Logan’s Proclamation, the first occurred in Charleston, South Carolina. On May 1, 1865, 10,000 black ex-slave adults and children held a march to honor 257 dead Union soldiers. The soldiers were buried in a mass grave at the racetrack in Washington, D.C., after dying in a Confederate prison camp there. After the fall of the city, the freed soldiers were dug up and given a proper burial. On May 1, they held a parade and laid flowers. The estimate of 10,000 men comes from contemporary reports, which were uncovered directly by historian David W. Blight, after references to the archives of Union veterans, some of which have been reported. Blight cites articles in the Charleston Daily Courier and the New-York Tribune.
What Is Labor Day And Why Do We Celebrate It?
No direct connection has been established between this event and the Logan Proclamations of 1868. Although Blight said that “African Americans created Memorial Day in Charleston, South Carolina,”
In 2012, he said there was “no evidence” that would justify Charleston naming Gerald Logan a national holiday.
On June 3, 1861, Warrton, Virginia, was the site of the first decorated grave of a Civil War soldier, according to a 1906 Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper article.

This decoration was for the funeral of the first soldier killed in action during the Civil War, John Quincy Marr, who fought and died on June 1, 1861 during the battle of Fairfax, Virginia.
In July 1862, women from Savannah, Georgia, decorated the graves at Laurel Grove Cemetery of Colonel Francis S. Bartow and his comrades who had fought and died at the Battle of Manassas (First Battle of Bull Run) the year before.
On April 26, 1865, in Jackson, Mississippi, Sue Landon Vaughan is said to have decorated the graves of Confederate and Union soldiers. However, the earliest mention of this event did not appear until many years later.

Whatever it is, it is inscribed on the southeast panel of the Confederate monument in Jackson, which was built in 1891.
And many scholars say that the beginning of the practice of Memorial Day in South Africa was started by a group of women in Columbus, Georgia.
The women were the Ladies Memorial Association of Columbus. They were greeted by Mary Ann Williams (Mrs. Charles J. Williams) who, as secretary, wrote a letter to the press in March 1866 asking for their help in establishing an annual holiday to decorate soldiers’ graves throughout the South.

This letter was reprinted in several southern countries, and the plans were written in northern newspapers. April 26 is the chosen date. The holiday was observed in Atlanta, Augusta, Macon, Columbus and other parts of Georgia, and in Montgomery, Alabama; Memphis, Tennessee; Louisville, Ky.; New Orleans, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi and across the South.
In some cities, mostly in Virginia, other days are observed in May and June. General John A. Logan drew attention in a speech to veterans on July 4, 1866, in Salem, Illinois.
Following General Order No. 11 issued by the Grand Army of the Republic commemorating May 30, 1868 by General Logan, an earlier version of the holiday began to be called Confederate Memorial Day.

A year after the war ended, in April 1866, four women from Columbus gathered at the Freedom Cemetery to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers. They felt moved to honor the Union soldiers buried there, and to record the grief of their families by decorating their graves. The story of their act of humanity and reconciliation is held up by some writers as the inspiration for the first Memorial Day, though it ultimately took place amidst the inspiring accusations.
According to the website of the United States Library of Congress, “Southern women decorated the graves of soldiers before the Civil War d. Records show that in 1865, Mississippi, Virginia, and South Carolina had examples of the Memorial.”
The first Memorial Day celebrations in the South were simple, poignant occasions for veterans and their families to honor the dead and visit local cemeteries.

In the years that followed, the Ladies’ Memorial Association and other groups focused on traditions to preserve Confederate culture and the lost Confederate narrative.
The dedication of the cemetery in 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, included a ceremony to commemorate the graves of the fallen soldiers. Some therefore say that President Abraham Lincoln was the founder of Memorial Day.
But Chicago journalist Lloyd Lewis tried to argue that it was Lincoln’s funeral that inspired the decoration of the soldiers’ graves that followed.

In the footnote to her brother’s story, Mrs. Sophie (Keller) Hall as she and Emma Hunter decorate the grave of Emma’s father, Reub Hunter, and the graves of all the soldiers in the cemetery. The original story did not mention Reub Hunter’s death which occurred two months later on September 19, 1864. It also did not mention Mother. Elizabeth Myers as one of the original contestants. But a bronze statue of the three women looking over Reub Hunter’s grave now stands near the Boalsburg cemetery. Even in July
