In 1969, an American senator named Gaillard Nelson witnessed the effects of a major oil spill in Santa Barbara, California and proclaimed Earth Day. In 1970, he called on all Americans to take a stand on the environment, and thousands of schools and universities around the world rallied in support of a healthy, sustainable planet. The Human Ecology Symposium was organized by the US Public Health Service in 1968 and encouraged students to hear scientists talk about the effects of a deteriorating environment on human health. In 1972, the US government established the Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air Act was passed. These include pollution from industry and roads, as well as habitat loss and species extinction. These nationwide gatherings helped create the United States Environmental Protection Agency and pass the Clean Air Act. Earth Day became a global event in 1990, with more than 140 countries participating. Nelson, the man behind the Earth Day movement, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995.
