Diamondbacks Opening Day 2023 – It’s only been a few weeks since we took our first look at the Diamondbacks 2023 roster, but with important trades, not-so-important trades and the presence of veterans signed in free agency, it’s looking longer. So, I think we may have to look at things again and see where Arizona is after this move. I would also like to talk a bit about the preferred scenario, as this will definitely play a role in the decision. As before, this is my best guess at what the team’s 26-man roster will look like on Opening Day. I have limited myself to the players currently on the 40 man roster. The newcomer is visibly relieved
This was clearly the focus of Hazenbomb, which came out of nowhere – perhaps the most telling commenter on the previous article was ISH95, “My results tell me there will be no change in the end.”
Diamondbacks Opening Day 2023
While Kelly is still likely to be the starter on Opening Day, I expect Moreno to slowly step up and take on more duties. Shame they’re both right-handed hitters, but we’ll count them out. If Moreno hits his (rather large) cup of coffee last year with a 111+ PA over 73, he’ll likely get the lion’s share of the starts soon, making Kelly’s long-term future in Arizona bleak It becomes more expensive through arbitration. Sanchez was DFA on the 23rd, so we should know soon if he’s still a Diamondback.
Here’s How To Catch Diamondback’s Spring Training Games
Spencer: Yes! I like Carson, but Moreno is the catcher I’d want if we had to make a deal for one. There’s no chance Murphy signs that extension in Arizona, so the price is too high for my liking. Take a big swing and see what happens. With a payroll like Arizona’s, there’s only so much you can do to try to compete.
Since Rojas is left-handed, it’s easy to envision Rojas getting the most playing time and … someone at third base. Previously, it was most likely Emmanuel Rivera, but now it may be Longoria who starts. However, keeping Evan at DH could help his health issues, which have limited him to less than 300 PA in each of the last three seasons. The good news is, there doesn’t seem to be anything recurring about the injury. Last year, for example, he had four (!) separate stints in IL recovering from hand surgery, a left oblique strain, a right hamstring strain and a broken pitching arm. Nothing out of the ordinary but bad luck for the 37 year old player.
Spencer: Longoria didn’t need to do that and it was too late to find out what Rivera had in him by spending more money (I think Rivera took the biggest hit in this signing). If the team really does give up on Emmanuel, I would look at moving for a better upgrade option. $4 million equals half the war. I’m not sure I trust the 37-year-old with his recent injury history. If Longoria replaces Lewis on the roster, I’ve been happy with the move for years. The reason Seattle is willing to move on from him is because his recent slump to AAA soured the relationship. It would not be wise to start his service here with the same move.
Dodgers Release 2023 Schedule: Here Are 10 Key Dates
Went with Carol on the opening day. Thomas may be one of the big “winners” in this year’s trade, as he is now a “true” center fielder. Even if someone else has that athleticism, they will probably be able to compete at better than replacement level and probably around average. He’s still an everyday left line, but the arrival of Longoria and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. helps balance the line when needed. If ISH95 was surprised by the change of holder, he predicted it with almost uncanny accuracy:
I think a trade will happen this offseason. If I had to guess, Varsha would be an infielder and be replaced by either a RH outfielder, which would rule him out, or a combination of pitching and catching.
Makakilo: What outfield position will Corbin Carroll play most of the time? Jim lists him as a left fielder, Jack Somers lists him as a right fielder, and Roster Source Fangraphs lists him as a center fielder. My opinion is that Corbin Carroll is a better defender in left field than right field, and Thomas is a natural center fielder, leaving McCarthy in right field (which matches Jim’s choice).
Arizona Diamondbacks Top Mlb Prospects
Interestingly, Fangraphs lists Lourdes Gurriel Jr. as a lefty, where he had a +3 DRS in 896.2 innings last season. Corbin Carroll is my choice for left field because he has a +3 DRS playing left field, but he has only done so in 176.1 innings.
This definitely leads to roster problems, as we have yet to find a place for the other newcomers, Diego Castillo or Kyle Lewis. Choice will play an important role in this decision. The good news is that there is plenty to see. Everyone entering the field has options; The three players listed above, along with Smith, Castillo and Lewis, make the possibilities nearly endless. For example, the FanGraphs roster resource now takes a different tack, with Thomas in the minors, Gurriel an everyday outfielder and Lewis on the bench. Or the Jack Somers version, with Smith still on the roster, replacing Rivera. These are all valid opinions.
My main gripe with Smith being pressed is that Walker doesn’t have an experienced backup at first base. Gurriel has some experience, but only 106.1 innings to start. That’s still more than Rivera (36) and it’s not the only position Longoria has played. Remember, there’s no reason why Walker’s name shouldn’t literally be preprinted on Torey Lovullo’s lineup card. Keep in mind that the 40-man roster will need to make room for Longoria when the deal is officially announced, and this could be a possible option later. Jack has a great piece on who can get behind the treehouse.
Arizona Diamondbacks 2022: Scouting, Projected Lineup, Season Prediction
Spencer: I’ve said I think Rivera will pay the price to sign Longoria, not Smith. He’s doing well at LIDOM right now, so I’m sure that will give him an advantage as the team decides that 3B is more of a need than a backup 1B/OF.
Makakilo: The following list includes players who can be called up from the minors as needed, with the caveat that there is currently room on the active list for two of the following players. We have Alec Thomas and Emmanuel Rivera on the active roster, but other options are possible. Roster sources (FanGraphs) indicate that these players are in the 40 man until further notice.
At least this is an area where nothing has changed for now. Teams can still sign former players. But I’m not sure he offers much of an advantage over young pitchers, something the team has no shortage of. While Nelson and Jameson had an excellent innings, they made seven starts between them. So I would like to see how they perform on a longer sample size before drawing any conclusions.
Mlb Breakout Season: Predicting Top 5 Mlb Players Who Could Have A Breakout Season In 2023
Makakilo: The Diamondbacks should plan to use 7 starters this season. Tommy Henry, as the starting pitcher on the 40-man roster, could be called upon to start the game. A starting seventh could be an acquisition or addition to the 40-man roster. One starting pitcher who isn’t on the 40-year-old is Brandon Pfaad.
I was reminded that Martin is out of options, so if he is not on the opening day roster, he will face waivers. Widener was required to DFA to make room for Diego Castillo on the 40-man roster. At the time of writing, I have yet to hear that he has been claimed, traded or handled, and he is still in the organization. Again, there is great flexibility here. Outside of Martin. Dance and Castro. Others have minor league options. So if a team wants to add a veteran/non-roster group or two, they can do so without losing anyone.
Spencer: Okay. I want to be better than Widener. At least he’s gone. Not sure if the right word is better, but yes.
Astros Trade Targets: Houston Could Pursue This Outfielder
Makakilo: The list below includes six relief pitchers who can be called up during the season. Check out this AZ snake pit article for additional possibilities. Major League Baseball has announced its regular season schedule for the 2023 season – and for the first time since interleague play began in 1997, all 30 teams will play at least one series against each other.
The schedule change is the result of a new collective bargaining agreement that ended the 99-day lockout in March. As a result of the extended play-offs, the emphasis on divisional and team play is reduced
