We believe, like other ARRL affiliates such as ARES and ES, that maintaining the ability to work should not be limited by the weather. The addition of Winter Field Days will enhance this already important capacity for those who volunteer their time and resources to these organizations. Therefore, WFD is open to all romantic radio operators in the world.

The first ARRL field day was held on the second Saturday in June 1933. Team W4PAW won the tournament with 1876 points. The first event, organized by FE Handy, attracted the attention of radio amateurs and became an annual tradition, with 1942 to 1945 being the only years when Field Day was not held, due to World War II.
For many, the main draw of Field Day is the competition: a high-speed climb to connect with as many stations as possible. The rules say that if the installation starts before the competition starts, the participants have 24 hours to find their connection, and those who started the competition have 27 hours. In 1968, the rules were changed and everyone had to submit within 27 hours, but the change was not popular and it was reinstated in 1969 with the current rules.

Each station will exchange information with other participating stations. For North American Field Day, exchanges have call signs; the name of the ARRL-identified section (as Grid Square) in which the station operates; and the type of location (indoor, outdoor or indoor), the class designation indicating the number of people working and the number of transmitters in use, and information about the type of power source connected (normal or emergency resources such as batteries, solar, generators , wind, etc.). This event is sponsored by the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and has started to spread abroad in many countries.
The Field Day portion of the competition has two goals: The first goal is to test the team’s ability to plan a successful event within twenty-four days, including the stamina of the entrepreneurs and the number of operators suitable for operation. The second objective was to demonstrate the technical capabilities of a rapidly built communications station: In theory, a better station could perform emergency work in difficult situations; such stations will also have the opportunity to communicate more during the Field Day portion of the game. The point system is designed to encourage emergency preparedness actions, such as assigning security personnel to the station or hiring additional forces.
While many radio enthusiasts work hard to beat the competition in the ticket category, the social aspect of the event has also grown over the years. Camping and cooking are common, with the radio operator taking turns working to keep the radio on the air.
