Chuck has an 80 percent accuracy rate, said William Frew, chairman of the zoo’s board of directors. He added that for the past 13 years, Chuck has correctly guessed the arrival of spring or the next six weeks of winter.
When Chuck’s main rival Punxsutawney Phil makes predictions, Chuck brags about his incredible speed.
Both last year when Chuck called for early spring while Phil predicted six weeks of winter.
Things You Didn’t Know About Groundhog Day
The tradition of Groundhog Day dates back to Gromnicki, an early Christian holiday during which candles were blessed and distributed. Those who celebrated Gromnica decided that the cloudless sky during this holiday meant a longer winter.
The Germans had come to believe that if the sun came out on Candlemas, the hedgehog would cast a shadow – foreshadowing another six weeks of harsh winter conditions. And it was the Germans who brought this belief to the United States.
When German settlers arrived in Pennsylvania, they found large amounts of ashes. And they assigned the task of predicting the weather to the land that looks like a hedgehog.

The festivities began with the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, founded in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The editor of the Punxsutawney newspaper was a member of this club and claimed that Phil’s Punxsutawney was the only country with a true weather forecast.
Chuck has been making predictions for over three decades; some years had more events than others.

Staten Island, New York – On Groundhog Day, America can’t wait to see if it will be the start of spring or another six weeks of winter.
Those who want to see Western Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil make his predictions from his home in Gobbler’s Knob can watch it here. The livestream kicks off around 6am, but let’s be honest: if you’re proud of your hometown, watch Staten Island Chuck.
According to tradition, if the ash tree sees its shadow, a longer winter is expected. No shadow? The beginning of spring is ahead of us.
Groundhog Day 2023: How To Watch Live From Home
How did Phil become so famous? It all started with the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, founded in 1887 by a group of marmot hunters. The editor of the Punxsutawney newspaper was a member of the club and claimed that Punxsutawney Phil was the only country with a true weather forecast (we have something to say about that).

Chuck has an 80 percent accuracy rate, said William Frew, chairman of the zoo’s board of directors. He added that for the past 13 years, Chuck has correctly guessed the arrival of spring or the next six weeks of winter. However, pupils at PS 45 in West Brighton said he was wrong in 2017. The last time he was wrong was in 2009, the same year he bit then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Chuck has been making predictions since 1981, and some years have been more accurate than others. In addition to Bloomberg’s sting in 2009, Chuck was fired by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014.

After a limited attendance last year due to the pandemic, tens of thousands of people gathered in a small town in western Pennsylvania to watch the ceremony hosted by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
Last year, Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter after seeing his shadow. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Phil was partly right – the neighboring United States experienced temperatures above average in February but below average in March.
Groundhog Day 2023 Ceremony: Staten Island Chuck’s Prediction To Be Live Streamed From The Zoo
Since 1887, Phil and his predecessors have predicted winter 104 times and called 20 early spring, according to the Stormfax Almanac (nine years without record). Live Science analyzed the data and concluded that Phil’s six-week prediction was only 39% correct.
According to NOAA, over the past 10 years, Phil has been 40% accurate and predicted 2020, 2016, 2014, and 2013.
As Phil attracts more and more attention each year, the New York media continues to anticipate a rivalry with his local rival, Chuck of Staten Island.
It’s Groundhog Day, So Here’s The Real Dirt On Your Weather Forecaster
Chuck, also known as Charles Hogg, lives at the Staten Island Zoo. He and his predecessors have been forecasting the weather since 1981, and last year he differed from Phil in forecasting early spring.
While Chuck was far from famous, he faced tougher conditions than his Pennsylvania counterpart. In 2009, Chuck bit then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg and secretly traded his granddaughter Charlotte for the 2014 ceremony. Unfortunately, then-Mayor Bill de Blasio grounded Charlotte, and Ash died a few days later.
Hopefully, New York’s new mayor, Eric Adams, will have a better working relationship with the toothy forecaster.

Chuck and Phil have been wrong with their predictions seven times since 2008, and the Staten Island rodents have only been wrong twice in that time, Staten Island Advance reports. In fact, since 1981, Chuck had an 80% accuracy rate. Don’t tell Phil.

The news was announced by the Milltown Wranglers, who noted that Mel’s untimely death had left them without a replacement.
Groundhog Day 2020: It’s Over, And Phil Didn’t See His Shadow
“Considering the life expectancy of a greyhound is around 3 years, this is not such a shock but Mel has left us during a difficult time of year when most of his friends have gone into hibernation so no children will be able to replace her until replaced this spring,” the group wrote on Facebook.
Last year was Mel’s sixth weather forecast, and so is Staten Island
